JAN-28, Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden beat Simone Borrelli and Andrea Vavassoli at the Australian Open Men’s, as he left his mark on history by becoming the new doubles champion. The Indian and Australian stars won in straight sets against the Italian pair 7-6 (0), 7-5.
After a long and exciting battle, Bopanna and Ebden won the first set of the men’s doubles final. Winning the match in the tiebreak, Bopanna and Ebden put on a dominant performance to take the first set 7-6.
The second set was just as exciting as the first. Borrelli and Vavassoli put on a dominant performance in the ninth game, but Bopanna and Ebden were unable to fight back. However, the powerful India-Australia duo made a spectacular comeback, closing out the second set 7-5 and winning the Australian Open men’s doubles for the first time.
At the beginning of the event, when the Indian tennis prodigy teamed up with Ebden to win their quarter-final match, Bopanna secured the world number one ranking in men’s doubles, making him the oldest player to achieve that feat at the age of 43. Bopanna becomes the fourth Indian to reach the top of the world rankings, following Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi (both men’s doubles) and former women’s world number one Sania Mirza(Womens doubles).
