JAN-29, The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced that 56 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states will go to polls on February 27.

The term of 50 Rajya Sabha MPs from 13 states will end on April 2nd, while six MPs from the remaining two states will retire on April 3rd.

States scheduled for Rajya Sabha polls include Uttar Pradesh (10), Maharashtra (6), Bihar (6), West Bengal (5), and Madhya Pradesh. (5), Gujarat (4), and Karnataka. (4), Andhra Pradesh (3), Telangana (3), Rajasthan (3), Orissa (3), Uttarakhand (1), Chhattisgarh (1), Haryana (1), and Himachal Pradesh (1).

The term of office of Rajya Sabha member is six years. One-third of the members of the Rajya Sabha, a permanent body, retire every two years to ensure continuity of functioning of the House.

Rajya Sabha Members are elected indirectly by elected members of the state legislatures. They are elected using proportional representation with one transferable vote.
