Feb-20, CHENNAI: Are some of the suicide cases in Tamil Nadu being wrongly classified as a result of online gambling addiction? Some of the families, after losing a loved one to suicide, are now suffering from false reports of death due to online gambling indulgences. Deaths from online gambling losses are a huge problem across the state, but families say misinformation is limiting any help they can get.
Ms. Saranya, 36 years old, came to know that her husband, Shankar S., had committed suicide while she was at work. “We wanted to buy a house, so we took out a housing loan. We had to pay Rs 23,000 as EMI, and we find it difficult. So, he faced a lot of mental pressure and could not pay it. He didn’t even have a smartphone,” she said.
Nitish Kumar, from TP Chatram, was a BCA student at SRM College. He also worked part-time at a tattoo parlor. After his death was revealed, police and news reports claimed that he suffered losses while playing online rummy. However, his family denied this claim.
His brother Akash, who is currently an engineering student at RMK College, said, “The police also thought that he committed suicide due to online rummy, but that is not true. The police did not carry out a proper investigation, and now CB-CID is investigating.”. Now no one will help us, because people expect me to spend money in the same way,” Akash added.
Bhuvaneswari, a domestic worker, saved every penny to save Rs 20,000 to pay his son’s school fees. However, her husband was an alcoholic and spent the money on alcohol. “She couldn’t bear it and took her own life. She was fed up with her husband’s alcoholism. However, police told the media that her husband was playing online games. ” said her mother, R. Sheila.
Nevertheless, media reports have repeatedly claimed that Suresh lost money playing online rummy. “People are now refusing to help my grandson, who is in grade 9,” Sheila said.
R. Kalimuthu, a police officer of the 2nd Battalion, Coimbatore City Armed Reserve Battalion, opened fire with his office rifle while on duty at a government-organized exhibition. All the headlines said that Kalimuthu committed suicide due to his addiction to online rummy.
